Overview
The Communications program of Wingate University prepares students for careers in many forms of media, including TV, radio and the Internet. If you want a career where top-notch communication skills are an absolute must, this is the program you need.
Once you declare a communication major, you choose one of the three areas of emphasis or one concentration.
Public Relations
With a public relations emphasis, you learn how to develop long- and short-term strategy and shape strong narratives with decisive communication goals. You learn how to write well and work under pressure, while capturing your readers’ attention.
Public relations is grounded in the real world. You’ll look at actual cases to understand how PR campaigns work. You’ll develop a portfolio of your own writing, examine current trends in the field and take on an internship to bolster your study with behind-the-scenes experience.
Make the conversation about you (or your client). Public relations graduates go on to careers at agencies and as in-house personnel at organizations across multiple industries. They work in PR, advertising, sales, marketing and communications for global companies.
Rhetoric and Performance
No matter what career path you choose, the ability to craft a cohesive argument for your point of view and to convince others will be an asset. If you’re interested in pursuing a career with a focus on strong oral communication skills, the Department of Communication and Art offers a communication major with a concentration in rhetoric and performance.
Journalism and Mass-Media
With this focus for your communication degree, you learn to tell a story through print, digital and video formats. You study the ethics of a career in the media. And you develop the ability to engage a diverse audience, a necessity in our globalized society.
WUTV, our state-of-the-art on-campus television station, offers the perfect training ground for future journalists. Get involved with writing, shooting, editing and on-air work, and get an early jump on your career.
Career Opportunities
Make the degree work for you. Graduates leave Wingate University well prepared for careers in editing and publishing, sports journalism, advertising, broadcasting, and media and public relations. Others apply their interpersonal, organizational and public speaking mastery to any number of possible positions.
