Overview
The Native Studies programme at Nipissing University provides a comprehensive academic foundation in the cultures, philosophies, and contemporary issues central to Indigenous communities. Students engage with a multidisciplinary curriculum that reflects holistic understandings of physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual learning.
Located on the territory of the Anishnabek and Nipissing First Nation, the university serves as a significant centre for Indigenous influence. This unique setting allows students to study within a diversity of Indigenous organisations and rural communities, fostering an inclusive environment for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners.
Why Native Studies at Nipissing University?
The institution offers distinctive teaching features such as Community Service-Learning, which integrates interactive and reciprocal engagement with the Nbisiing Secondary School. Students benefit from the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, known as Enji giigdoyang, which provides specialised tutoring, counselling, and connections with elders.
Facilities include the award-winning Harris Learning Library, featuring 56,000 square feet of modern study space and dedicated Indigenous resource guides. The campus is situated on 291 hectares of Canadian Shield forest, providing a student-centred environment that emphasises hands-on experiential learning and research opportunities.
Undergraduate students can participate in the annual Undergraduate Research Conference to present their work to peers and professors. Additionally, the Record of Student Development allows students to document co-curricular activities, volunteering, and leadership roles to demonstrate key competencies to future employers.
