Overview

They engineer processes and systems that improve quality and productivity. They work to eliminate waste of time, money, materials, energy and other commodities. Unlike many engineering careers which focus on very specific areas, industrial and systems engineers are a versatile group of experts who are trained to tackle a wide array of society’s problems.

In the Industrial and Systems Engineering program of University of Michigan-Dearborn you will learn how to design, develop and evaluate integrated systems for managing engineering and service processes, including human work factors, quality control, inventory control, logistics, and materials flow and costs analysis.

During your studies, expect to develop extensive skills in mathematics, the physical and social sciences, and the core principles and methods of engineering analysis and design. And once you’ve completed this bachelor of science in engineering, you’ll be prepared to work in a range of fields including manufacturing, logistics, health systems, service systems, design and ergonomics.

What Will I Learn?

  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  • An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare
  • An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  • An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments
  • An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment
  • An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
