The military history division examines the nature and art of armed conflict through a multitude of lenses and themes, including the story of war and wars; the experience of battle; the characteristics of military leaders; the impact of violence on people and peoples; the evolution of military institutions; the intersection of warfare with politics, international relations, economics, society, the natural environment, culture, and technology; the development of theory and doctrine; and historiography, the history of historical writing itself.

The military history division produces scholars and leaders who are among the most effective problem-solvers and communicators in our army and nation. Formulaic “lessons” and “drills” will not solve today’s complex challenges – you will, and your journey to success begins in the military history division.

The study of Military History at United States Military Academy at West Point encourages critical thinking by requiring cadets to:

formulate critical questions;
conduct research by gathering and prioritizing information;
analyze information within the broad context in which it appears;
interpret and synthesize information;
derive reasoned, evidence-based conclusions;
assess and adjust their conclusions as conditions change or new information becomes available.

Up to 60 international cadets may study at West Point at any given time. Eligible countries are selected on an annual basis by the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Department of Defense. The American embassies notify invited nations to nominate up to six candidates per country to compete for admission to West Point.
