Sociology is the study of social life, change, and the causes and consequences of human behavior in relationship to existing systems in society. Not only do the majors in the Sociology program of Augustana University have opportunities for program specific scholarships, studying Criminology, Deviance, and Law; Family and Community Services; Medicine and Healthcare Systems; or Sociology in the Department of Sociology prepares you to understand and engage in our rapidly changing and increasingly diverse social world. Studying sociology provides a valuable foundation for any career since it teaches students to identify, understand, and critically examine how social systems influence individual behavior, as well as understand how changes in the structure of society influences society as a whole. 

Our faculty earned their degrees from The University of Notre Dame, University of Kansas, Yale, and SDSU, publish research spanning a variety of topics, and engage in interdisciplinary work including projects with undergraduate students. Through classroom learning and research that applies "systems level” thinking as an analytic tool, we equip students for graduate school or a diverse range of career fields including community development, human services, business, criminology (law, government, judicial and law enforcement services), medicine, healthcare practice, administration, and policy, education, or the ministry.

English Language Requirements

    The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.7

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.7 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Apply online using the Augustana online application form or using the Common Application.
  • All secondary and post-secondary transcripts and/or national exam scores.
  • One letter of recommendation from a teacher or professor.
  • A Personal Statement (250 words minimum) describing a significant challenge you have overcome.
  • College Preparation Test Scores and/or English Language Test Scores from one or more of the following tests: ACT, SAT, TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, PTE, IKEN, TEC CBT, ELS Language Center's.
  • Financial Statement showing sufficient resources to support yourself for one academic year.
  • Completed International Student Financial Ability Form.
  • A copy of the photo page of your passport.
