Overview
Students actively engage in research as part of the psychology curriculum and may also choose to engage in research projects in faculty laboratories. A sophisticated collection of technological tools promotes teaching and research within the department.
Learning goals
Middlebury College students who graduate with a Psychology major will develop knowledge, skills, and values consistent with the science and application of psychology. Specifically, they will be able to:- Demonstrate familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology.
- Understand and apply basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis, and interpretation.
- Respect and use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and, when possible, the scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes.
- Understand and apply psychological principles to personal, social, and organizational issues.
- Value empirical evidence, tolerate ambiguity, act ethically, and reflect other values that are the underpinnings of psychology as a science.

General requirements
- Middlebury admissions requires an application essay. You’ll find possible essay prompts on the Common Application website. The Middlebury application does not require a supplemental essay.
- Allow ample time for teachers to complete their recommendations online by the deadline.
- Your counselor will complete the form online and return it to Middlebury with your 9th–11th grade transcripts.
- If our nonrefundable $75 application fee presents a barrier for you, we encourage you to apply using a fee waiver.
- Middlebury accepts a number of English proficiency tests for students whose first language is not English or whose secondary education has been at a school where English is not the primary language of instruction.
- If you choose to submit standardized test scores, please request that testing services or your guidance department submit scores directly to Middlebury College.
- You will be able to upload additional materials directly to your student portal.
