Overview
If you intend to pursue a career in playwriting, dramaturgy, arts administration, theatre history/criticism, or casting, or if you want to pursue a master’s or doctoral degree, the Theatre Creation program of Ball State University is for you.
Faculty
Our theatre creation faculty are dedicated to helping you develop your individual skills and providing you with a rigorous and diverse educational experience to prepare you for the real world.
- Our low student-to-faculty ratio and small class sizes ensure that professors know you as an individual and can provide hands-on advising and mentoring based on your unique talents and academic needs.
- Our theatre creation faculty have diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise in multiple disciplines, allowing you to craft an individualized four-year course of study.
Work Opportunities
We value hands-on learning, so you will always have opportunities to work, building on your classroom experience.
- With 20 or more theatre and dance performances each year in our mainstage, studio, and workshop spaces, you will have access to classic and contemporary plays, musicals, dance pieces, and works that are devised or not textually based.
- As a student of our theatre creation option, you are eligible to audition for departmental productions beginning second term of your freshman year. You can pursue other opportunities as well (e.g. direct, write, design, stage manage, or dramaturg).
- Ball State University is within driving distance of major theatres in Chicago, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Louisville.
- Faculty members can assist you in finding internships, regional and summer work, and top graduate programs if you are interested in continued study.
- We host an annual Playwriting Week, which is one of the artistic highlights of year. Professional playwrights, dramaturgs, and screenwriters from around the country come to campus and hold workshops and conduct master classes. If you are a student playwright, you have the opportunity to present a staged reading of your play for the guest artists, followed by a discussion and critique.
