Overview

The Sociology program of Wesleyan University is designed to help students develop new frameworks for analyzing a broad array of social relations—from everyday life interactions to large-scale historical and structural transformations—and to cultivate a critical appreciation for the academic discipline of sociology.

The faculty of the Sociology Department offers courses in a variety of fields including social theory, social movement, critical media studies, sexualities, family, gender, race & ethnicity, education, inequality, globalization, economy & development, work, leisure, healthcare, urban sociology, religious movements, philanthropy, political sociology, and sociological methods of analysis.

Study Abroad

Study abroad is fully compatible with completing the major, but students who plan to go abroad for a semester are expected to discuss with their major advisors how such studies will fit into their overall academic program before finalizing their plans. Pre-approved study abroad courses can be transferred to the major as non-departmental major credit (up to 3 credits; see details in Major Requirements and Transfer Credit).

A high degree of proficiency in English, as described below, must also be demonstrated.

A strong secondary school preparation in English, social science, science, mathematics, and a foreign language.

Candidates studying at schools outside the US who have taken national examinations for university admission (A levels, French Baccalaureate, ISC, International Baccalaureate, etc.) are expected to have achieved superior results.

Interviews are not required as part of the admissions process, but we encourage prospective students to arrange them if possible.
