Overview

Students in the Spanish program at the University of Kentucky choose between three tracks of study: Spanish language and linguistics; Spanish literature and culture; and general Spanish.

Majors will develop their Spanish language skills; acquire a deep understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures and literatures domestically and abroad; sharpen critical thinking skills; and heighten their awareness of their role as local and global citizens in a pluralistic society.

Careers

The Spanish major prepares students for a variety of professional opportunities in the United States and abroad.

Students may pursue careers in education, government, law, social services, health care, tourism, publishing and non-profit organizations. Spanish majors may also continue their education with an advanced degree in area studies, business or law.

Admission for freshman applicants is based on a holistic review including high school grades, national college admission test results (if submitted), successful completion of the pre-college curriculum and essay. Some colleges and programs at UK require an admission process separate from general undergraduate admission to the University. These selective admission majors and programs may require some combination of the following:
- Standardized test scores and/or higher GPAs than those required for general admission, including meeting the minimum Kentucky statewide academic readiness requirements for Reading, Writing and Math.
- A separate application after being admitted for general admission
- A portfolio of past work related to the requested field
- On-campus or video interviews
