Overview
Your learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. The Anthropology program from Illinois State University cares deeply about civic engagement. You’ll join other students who share your passion for helping others and apply your knowledge to real-world projects that make a positive difference.
The Anthropology field is diverse and offers you the opportunity to pursue your own curiosity. At Illinois State, we’ll give you a basic foundation in all the interesting aspects of Anthropology. From there, you can choose to focus on whatever interests you most.
- Archaeology studies humans through remains and artifacts left behind centuries ago.
- Anthropological linguistics is all about language and how it shapes culture and social structure.
- Cultural anthropology looks at the diverse human cultures of the past and present, including beliefs and social norms.
- Biological anthropology focuses on the evolution of humans and seeks to understand human diversity.
Whatever focus you choose, our program prepares you for any career. You’ll leave our program with the skills employers seek, such as writing, analysis, communication, and problem-solving. Most of our students do not become Anthropologists. Instead, they’re applying their skills in fields like business, teaching, film, and non-profits.
Why study Anthropology?
Anthropology at Illinois State is all about active learning and we offer lots of opportunities for you to get involved right from the start.
The program lets you touch history with your own hands. Whether you’re in the lab or digging in the dirt at one of our field schools, you’ll work with real bones and cultural artifacts. We have field school opportunities all over the world that allow you to explore culture, linguistics, history, and evolution.
We’re also big into research. The faculty are always working on projects and making major contributions to the field. You can partner alongside them and work on projects that spark your curiosity.
The program offers you all the support you need from start to finish. We work closely with each other as partners and collaborate with diverse groups of people.
