Following the Civil War, Alice Scott Chandler opened a private school for children in her home. In the following year, she moved the school to Bowling Green, Virginia, and named it the Home School for Girls. In 1872, the school moved into a larger building and was renamed the Bowling Green Female Seminary.


We embody Southern Virginia’s core values, which are scholarship, discipleship, accountability, enthusiasm, and refinement. Southern Virginia University seeks to establish a replicable self-sustaining model of higher education that can serve Latter-day Saints throughout the world.

Every student receives one-on-one career counseling to help create a resume and a job search strategy. Career counselors build relationships with potential employers to give students a leg up on the job market. Experience provides powerful career preparation. Career counselors network with organizations and employers to provide students and graduates meaningful internship opportunities that will prepare them with experience and connections.

Student services

The Travel Study office runs the Travel Study Program and helps students enroll and prepare for trips. Students who are interested in going on a trip or who have questions are free to stop by the office in Main 216.

Housing services

Southern Virginia offers several housing options for students including traditional residence halls, houses shared by multiple students and townhouse-style apartments. On-campus housing options for married students include the Gayle Smith Apartments.

Library services

Von Canon Library has a reciprocal borrowing agreement with Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute. This means that students, faculty, and staff can check out materials from these institutions. Simply go to the library’s circulation desk and tell them you are a Southern Virginia student and want to check out materials. They will help you with appropriate forms.

ICT services

Von Canon Library provides computers on the main floor and computers on the mezzanine level. The library computers are accessible during all library service hours. The computers in the computer lab are available for patron use when a class is not in session.There is free Wi-Fi access throughout the library and network internet access from library computers.

Medical services

The Health Center is located in the basement of Main Hall. The Health Center offers a variety of services for students, including over the counter medications, first aid supplies, strep tests, urine tests, b/p and weight checks, etc. Students who miss class because of illness and need a sick note for their professor should contact the Health Center on the day of their illness. 

Student Life

Campus life

Living on campus improves the entire college experience for our students. In addition to the benefits of regular activities and proximity to campus facilities, all university housing includes lightning-fast internet, 24-hour security, prompt maintenance, on-site property management, and dorm-loop shuttle service. 

In addition to movie nights, dances, theatrical performances, athletic events and other activities, students find countless ways to get involved on campus in student clubs and organizations. When no activity is scheduled, The Kimball Student Center provides a relaxed atmosphere with pool tables, ping-pong, air hockey, video games, and other ways to kick back and have a good time.

Sports facilities

Southern Virginia University is the only college that offers NCAA Division III athletics within a faith-supportive environment for Latter-day Saints. Since 1996, the Knights have established a tradition of athletic excellence by winning 40 small college national championships in a variety of men’s and women’s individual and team sports.Sports:

It was a good experience but could have been better. A lot of the learning was done by the students. The few teachers gave what they could and let us do a lot o studying. The great thing about this school is that we had 3 years of clinical practice which is very amazing.
