History

  • CBU traces its roots to 1951 when the “St. Francis Xavier University Sydney Campus”, also referred to as “Xavier Junior College” (XJC), was opened in downtown Sydney as a satellite campus of St. Francis Xavier University. Growth during the 1950s saw several buildings opened on this site.

Student services

  • As a CBU student, we think your experience should be personally and educationally rewarding. That’s why the services we provide address more than your academic challenges—they also tackle the physical, emotional, spiritual and social challenges that can make a difference to the level of success you achieve.

Housing services

  • Living in residence is a big part of the university experience, and will provide the foundation for so many of the memories you make at CBU. In our residences, students from all over the world come together to discover what it really means to be a Cape Bretoner. From the moment you arrive in your residence, you’re going to feel like you’ve found your home away from home.
  • We believe that your residence experience should be as enriching and fun as possible. Our residence buildings are always buzzing with activity, and with tons of on-campus societies, there is always something to do! 

Library services

  • The CBU library offers excellent instruction and information resources to its users through the selected databases, online journals, newspapers, and books in print and electronic format that are purchased, or access provided to on campus, electronically, and through Interlibrary Loan. 

ICT services

  • At Cape Breton University, the IT Services Department delivers technology services and support to faculty, staff and students. From networking through educational support, academic and administrative computing, IT Services endeavours to provide the best possible support to its clients. All classrooms have been equipped with smart classroom technologies. 

Medical services

  • Cape Breton University recognizes the important relationship between mental and physical health, over-all well being and academic success. As such, CBU is committed to supporting students as they develop the skills to enhance well being and cope with challenges. CBU is also committed to providing access to Health Services to support both on and off campus.

Campus life

  • Cape Breton University offers three unique residence living options so you can choose the best arrangement for you. From the traditional single dorm room, to an apartment style set-up with roommates, we think you’re really going to love life on campus!

Sports facilities

  • Cape Breton Health and Recreation Complex: Located within Cape Breton University’s campus, this cutting edge complex houses indoor and outdoor turf soccer fields; an eight lane synthetic track with a field event venue; a community health and wellness/fitness facility; community outreach programming rooms; various game courts and practice venues as well as academic/wellness programming and research.

Great teachers

A very good university that embraces everyone from every culture, tribe and is open to all. The student are friendly and everyone in the community is friendly and the city is peaceful, a place of warm welcome

CBU Business

I had a great experience at Cape Breton University, the Shannon School of Business professors were always so helpful in their teaching styles. Further, the smaller class sizes were conductive to me having such a great learning experience. The location isn't the best but if you live close it's not an issue.

A Well-Rounded Experience

I completed my studies at Cape Breton University in Business Administration, and my overall experience was quite positive. What really stood out to me was the close-knit community feel on campus. Since the university is smaller compared to others, it was easy to build relationships�not just with fellow students, but also with professors. The class sizes were small, which made it easier to ask questions and get personalized help when needed. The professors were generally knowledgeable and passionate about their subjects. I especially appreciated how many of them focused on practical, real-world examples that helped me understand how to apply what I learned outside the classroom. That made the coursework feel relevant and useful. Campus life at CBU is fairly quiet, which was perfect for me since I prefer a more focused study environment. While it�s not the place for a big party scene or large events, there are still clubs and activities to get involved in if you want. I enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to balance academics with some social time. One small downside was that some of the study spaces and library resources could get crowded during busy times, so I learned to plan ahead. Also, a few courses could benefit from more updated materials or interactive teaching methods, but overall the quality of education was solid. In conclusion, Cape Breton University offers a supportive environment with accessible professors and a strong sense of community. It�s a great choice if you want a university where you won�t feel lost in the crowd, and where practical learning is emphasized. If you�re looking for a quieter campus with personalized attention, CBU could be a good fit.
