Since our founding in 1794, Bowdoin has undergone a lot of changes. But there a few threads that tie together everyone who has walked this quad: a commitment to the common good, a rigorous intellectual life, and memories that last a lifetime.
A modern liberal arts education takes whatever you're passionate about—history, medicine, music, law, neuroscience, engineering, poetry, teaching, biology—and helps you understand how it will impact the world around you.
With over 200 Bowdoin students engaging in faculty-mentored research each year, Bowdoin is one of the most active research institutions among liberal arts colleges today.
Students find that immersing themselves in a particular research question gives them a chance to personalize their undergraduate experience, and it often serves as a springboard for independent study and honors projects.
Fellowships also lead to students coauthoring papers with their faculty mentors, or presenting their findings at professional meetings—experiences that are invaluable for those students considering graduate study.
The Bowdoin community of alumni, employers, and family and friends is stepping up in extraordinary ways.
Career Exploration and Development and thousands of Polar Bear alums are here to support you virtually—no matter where you are in your college career, or where you are in the world.

Managed by the Office of Residential Life, housing at Bowdoin comprises residence halls, College Houses, and apartments. All of our residence offerings provide a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for young people transitioning away from home. Our centralized campus means that everything is about five minutes from everything else, so you'll spend plenty of time saying and receiving the famous "Bowdoin Hello.".
All Bowdoin residences have wireless internet, high-speed ethernet ports, free streaming cable TV through Xfinity, telephone service, and a OneCard system that controls entry doors and laundry machines. Students needing special accommodations should contact the Office of Accessibility.
Bowdoin College library staff, services, and information resources advance the pursuit of knowledge and self-enrichment by providing access to the world of information and ideas. In support of that mission, the library serves as an intellectual and cultural gathering place that fosters and enhances learning, education, research, and personal fulfillment.
Health Services serves the medical and nursing needs of the Bowdoin student community. We are here to promote the health and well being of Bowdoin College students by providing primary health care and educational outreach.
Bowdoin College is located in Brunswick, Maine, a town of approximately 20,000 people, first settled in 1628, on the banks of the Androscoggin River, a few miles from the shores of Casco Bay. The 207-acre main campus is organized around a central quadrangle.
If we start from the center and move outward: our campus is the place where we feel inspired, challenged, safe, and welcome. Intentionally small, and woven together by paths and pines, you can get from one side to the other in under ten minutes of walking.
Bowdoin Polar Bears compete in thirty-one varsity sports, but the fierce competition doesn't end there. Intramurals and club sports help students stay active, build teamwork, and meet new friends... or rivals?
Some students join these teams because they bring experience from home, but teams of all skill levels ensure that you're encouraged to try something new, like rugby, equestrian competition, cycling, volleyball, or Ultimate Frisbee. Our coastal Maine location presents unique seasonal and outdoor opportunities like alpine skiing, rowing, and curling.
More than 100 different groups sponsor extra- and cocurricular activities for students, faculty, staff, and community members. Together, these organizations broaden and enrich your time at Bowdoin by providing social, cultural, and educational experiences outside the classroom.
Bowdoin College is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education.
It has been an incredibly pleasurable experience because of the humor and positive attitude the university handles everything from email correspondence to website malfunction
