University of Louisville

The University of Louisville is a state supported research university located in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area. It was a municipally supported public institution for many decades prior to joining the university system in 1970. The University has three campuses. The 287-acre Belknap Campus is three miles from downtown Louisville and houses seven of the university's 12 colleges and schools.

On April 3, 1798, eight men declared their intention to establish the Jefferson Seminary in Louisville and called upon their fellow citizens to join them in pledging funds for land, buildings, and teachers.

Occurring a few weeks after the Kentucky legislature had chartered this academy, this event marked the beginning of an advanced level of education for the young people

Housing services

More than a place to rest your head, UofL’s housing program offers a community-like atmosphere that supports students as they successfully transition from high school to college. It’s a place where everyone can belong and make life-long connections to their peers.

Total facilities include 11 residential communities on campus (primarily for freshmen) and four affiliated properties bordering campus, geared to non-first year students, those with families and graduate students.

The facilities are home to more than 6,000 students from right here in Louisville, across the country and around the globe.

Student clubs

The University of Louisville hosts over 400 student organizations covering a wide variety of student interests. These groups provide a wonderful opportunity to become involved in campus life and to connect with other students on campus.

Student Involvement oversees all Recognized Student Organizations (RSO) on campus and assists with the formation of new groups, leadership training, new member intake and the planning of numerous campus events. The staff is available to consult with individuals and organizations to help them succeed and get involved.


The University of Louisville is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelor, master, specialist, doctoral, and first-professional degrees (D.M.D., J.D., M.D.).
