History
In 2006, the university embarked upon an ambitious five-year, $4.3 billion campaign, The Stanford Challenge, to ensure that Stanford continues to educate future leaders and to find solutions to the most pressing global challenges. The scholarly initiatives at the heart of the campaign focus on the environment, international relations, human health, the arts and K-12 education.
Education
Stanford University is one of the world's leading research universities. Areas of excellence range from the humanities to social sciences to engineering and the sciences. Research
The era of globalization means many things for Stanford: research on issues such as international security, exchanges with foreign universities, overseas opportunities for undergraduates, and collaboration with colleagues worldwide. In the area of human health, Stanford is conducting pioneering research in stem cells, bioengineering, regenerative medicine, neuroscience and cancer treatment. Stanford is also expanding its commitment to the arts by creating a new "Arts District" on campus, anchored by the existing Cantor Arts Center and the Bing Concert Hall, a new performing arts center which opened in 2013.

Career Communities is a team of career coaches who are embedded in student communities and connect with students in appointments and meetups to help them explore career paths, identify and apply for opportunities, and cultivate personalized networks that shape their professional journey.
At BEAM, our aim is to help students develop their own career communities.The Arts Expert in Residence event in May 2015 defined what it was to be in an arts career community. Housing services
About 62 percent of graduate students eligible for housing live in university-provided housing designed for single students, couples and families with children. New graduate students are guaranteed housing their first year on campus when they apply by the spring deadline.
The undergraduate housing system includes 80 diverse facilities. About 25 percent of students join one of the 16 fraternities or 14 sororities recognized on campus. Seven fraternities and three sororities offer housing.
There are 850 owner-occupied housing units for faculty on campus, as well as 628 rental units for faculty and staff.

ICT services
University IT cable modem service gives you access to the Internet at speeds up to 40 Mpbs V and 25 Mpbs ^. The cable modem service does not provide direct network access to Stanford resources, though faculty, staff, and students with a Stanford account (SUNet ID and password) have access to Stanford-licensed materials via web-based authentication or through the use of the Campus VPN service.

Student Life
Campus life
As of Autumn 2015, 6,509 undergraduates and 5,709 graduate students live in university-provided housing. Housing is guaranteed for four years for entering freshmen. Approximately 97 percent of all undergraduates registered and residing at the home campus live in on-campus housing.
The Stanford University Department of Public Safety (SUDPS) provides law enforcement, security, safety, crime prevention and emergency services on campus 24 hours a day. The department is comprised of sworn and non-sworn personnel. Sworn officers are reserve deputy sheriffs with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office and are empowered to enforce the law in the State of California pursuant to Penal Code 836.
