Film Production Diploma program at the Toronto Film School offers an intensive, behind-the-scenes education across all areas of filmmaking. You’ll experience every phase of pre-production, production and post production, writing and analyzing screenplays, developing storyboards, creating shot lists and preparing budgets and schedules.

About

You’ll learn to shoot, direct, block, light scenes and capture audio, as well as assemble, cut and manipulate footage. Mentored by leading industry professionals, you’ll develop a wide variety of productions from documentaries to commercials, public service announcements, short films, music videos, and even the beginnings of that feature you’ve always dreamt of making. You’ll leave the program with the creative, technical and business expertise to launch your career in the film industry. The Film Production program is offered by Toronto Film School.

Cross collaboration

We provide a unique opportunity for cross-industry collaboration. You’ll bring your productions to life, working with students across creative programs including Writing for Film and TV, Acting for Film, TV & the Theatre and Video Game Design. Through both on-campus and off-campus productions, you’ll be mentored by a variety of cross-industry professionals.

English Language Requirements

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • Minimum required score:

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • Students are required have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent).
  • You may be asked to take a mature student test, if you are over 18 and not enrolling directly from secondary school
  • You must meet admission requirements for your program of choice
So you want to be a filmmaker? We want to hear your thoughts about film and storytelling. Please submit two short assignments:
  • Movie Critique: Write a professional critique (300-500 words) about any feature length film, describing the film’s strengths and weaknesses and assessing its overall entertainment value. You should also include various elements of filmmaking such as direction, acting, lighting, editing, effects. We’re interested in seeing your level of awareness for what makes a film work (or not). Please note, movie critiques will not be returned.
  • Storyboard: Dream up any film idea and develop a storyboard. You may also include dialogue and direction. Don’t worry about your drawing skills, you can use storyboard software or stick figures. We’re looking to see your ability for putting single visual frames into a sequence that tells a story. Storyboards will be returned during the third week of classes.
