Overview
The Film Production programme at Toronto Film School offers an intensive, behind-the-scenes education that covers all areas of filmmaking. You will experience every phase of pre-production, production and post-production while learning from industry-active filmmakers with projects such as Beauty and the Beast, Black Panther, The Shape of Water and Star Trek Beyond to their credit.
The programme covers various aspects of filmmaking, including writing and analyzing screenplays, developing storyboards, creating shot lists and preparing budgets and schedules.
You will learn to shoot, direct, block, light scenes and capture audio, as well as assemble, cut and manipulate footage.
Real World Education
From your first term, you are on set, behind the camera, inside editing stations and in distribution meetings. You produce at least one film project per term and gain hands-on experience, working each position on set, in a range of productions. You learn how to shoot in multiple styles with access to Toronto Film School’s studios and industry-standard cameras like the ALEXA Mini and ARRI Amira.
The Film Production Work Placement then elevates all that you have learned in school to the next level and gives you the unique opportunity to work in studios and production houses in Toronto.
Small Class Sizes
In small classes with one-on-one instruction and mentoring, you’ll have the greatest opportunity to reach your full potential. You’ll also build invaluable relationships with classmates and professional networks with peers across creative programmes.

General requirements
So you want to be a filmmaker? We want to hear your thoughts about film and storytelling. Please submit two short assignments:
- Movie Critique: Write a professional critique (300-500 words) about any feature length film, describing the film’s strengths and weaknesses and assessing its overall entertainment value. You should also include various elements of filmmaking such as direction, acting, lighting, editing, effects. We’re interested in seeing your level of awareness for what makes a film work (or not). Please note, movie critiques will not be returned.
- Storyboard: Dream up any film idea and develop a storyboard. You may also include dialogue and direction. Don’t worry about your drawing skills, you can use storyboard software or stick figures. We’re looking to see your ability for putting single visual frames into a sequence that tells a story. Storyboards will be returned during the third week of classes
