Overview
In four years, you’ll gain a joint Mathematics with Teaching (Hons) degree from the University of Strathclyde along with a professional teaching qualification and will be qualified to enter the probationary year as a teacher of mathematics in Scottish secondary schools.
Students on the BSc (Honours) in Mathematics course for the first two years can transfer to the Mathematics with Teaching course guaranteed (subject to progress requirements) for the start of 3rd year.
What you’ll study
Years 1 & 2
You’ll follow the same curriculum as the BSc (Honours) in Mathematics. Part-time study is possible. In addition to the study of core mathematical methods, you’ll learn calculus, geometry, applied analysis, mechanics, numerical analysis probability and statistics.
Year 3
One half of the course is focused upon education with input from staff in the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. You’ll also undertake work placements in schools.
Education classes start in late August at the beginning of Year 3. If you realise that teaching is not for you, it is possible to transfer to the Honours degree course in Mathematics.
Year 4
Again the course is split between Mathematics & Statistics and Education. Mathematics-based classes are contained in semester one and with the final semester devoted to topics in Education and school experience.
Careers
Graduates from this course will follow with the paid probationary year in teaching. This leads to employment opportunities within a variety of local authorities as a secondary school teacher.
