Biochemistry with a Modern Language (Hons)

Overview

Many exciting discoveries made in this area have contributed to our understanding of life, the solving of medical problems, and to the discovery and production of safe and effective drugs.

Studying Biochemistry with a Modern Language (Hons) course offered at The University of Manchester you will learn about topics such as the structure of biomolecules, and how they interact in essential processes and pathways in our cells.

You will also study the actions of enzymes, and how they can be inhibited by drugs, as well as genetic engineering and molecular biology.

We offer French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin for the language component of the course, which includes a year abroad on a research placement.

Career opportunities

Graduates from modern language courses are extremely desirable to employers who require significant relevant work experience. In the growing field of international bioscience research collaborations, graduates with a good command of a foreign language are at a distinct advantage.

Our graduates go into a wide range of sectors. Around a third choose to work in scientific research and development, which may require significant postgraduate study, usually a PhD. Subsequently they secure jobs as researchers working in universities and pharmaceutical and bioscience companies and institutes.

Around two-thirds of graduates choose other career options such as teaching or communicating science, as well as careers unrelated to biological sciences including management, finance, marketing and the civil service.
