Overview

At the Civil Engineering Infrastructure program offered by University College Dublin you will understand how the theory of soil mechanics can be applied in design practice, you will design a foundation system within a limit state design framework using analytical approaches or in-situ test data and you will design and interpret a ground investigation to provide information on which to base a design.

Key Facts

Develop capability to solve conceptual structural design problems. Develop qualitative understanding of load paths and structural response to load. Choose appropriate efficient and cost-effective geotechnical solutions for given outline problems. Students are assigned into groups. Each group is given scheme designs to complete. Groups must present an oral and written design solution for each scheme. Each case study is presented to colleagues and experts from industry and academia in an interruptible forum.

General requirements

Applicants presenting the Irish Leaving Certificate (established) must have six recognised subjects, selected according to course requirements, and must obtain Grade H5, or better, in two subjects and Grade O6/H7, or better, in the remaining four subjects. For all courses in UCD, this must include English.
In terms of A level/GCSE, matriculation is a minimum of 2 grades C at A level and 4 grades C at GCSE which must include English. In addition, there are specific subject requirements for different courses.
