Overview
In Dalhousie University 's Bachelor of Commerce in Finance programme, you’ll gain an understanding of both corporate finance and investments in such areas as securities analysis, portfolio theory, risk management, the operation and regulation of security markets and financial institutions, international finance, and applied techniques of financial management.
Programme options
As part of your degree, you’ll complete a Co-op programme consisting of three paid work terms. This gives you valuable work experience in a variety of roles and organizations that will enhance your resume upon graduation.
Past finance majors in the Co-op programme have worked for financial departments in the government, non-profits and corporations. Others have worked for financial planners, insurance companies, banks, and other financial institutions.
Some students choose to work at different placements each term, while others spend all three work terms with the same company, continuing to enhance their learned skills.

What you will learn
Along with theoretical financial principles, you’ll gain valuable real-world skills as you learn to work with financial spreadsheet programmes, database packages and other software applications used in financial projections. You’ll further develop your real-work skills during your co-op work terms.
The Major in Finance has been accepted into the CFA Institute University Recognition Programme. This status is granted to institutions whose degree programme(s) incorporate at least 70% of the CFA Programme Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK), which provide students with a solid grounding in the CBOK and positions them well to sit for the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) exams.

Many students choose to continue their education and earn a a graduate degree or become a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
Future studies in the finance area also include the MScB programme in Finance, an advanced master's level programme geared to allow graduates to produce high calibre research for industry, academia or to accelerate their advancement in a doctorate programme in Finance.

General requirements
To be considered for admission to this programme, you must meet minimum academic criteria:
- Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
- Achievement of the minimum average for your programme of choice.
- Completion of Grade 12 English (or equivalent course).
Admission to many Dalhousie programmes is competitive. This means that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Major Requirements:
An average of B- between COMM 2202 (Finance I) and COMM 2203 (Finance II) is required to major in Finance.
