Overview

The need for security is everywhere: airports, schools, stores, your home. More than ever before people are asking for electronic solutions to help restore peace of mind in an uncertain world. The demand for skilled security technicians has never been higher than it is now.

Security technicians work mainly with low-voltage systems under 30 volts, using many specialized installation and testing tools. Students are trained to work safely and effectively on 12 volt systems, 120 volt circuits, TCP/IP and telephone networks, and more.

The Security Systems Technician program from British Columbia Institute of Technology is divided into two levels. Level 1 deals with basic installation techniques and the theories and codes which govern the security industry. Level 2 involves installing and troubleshooting intrusion alarms, surveillance cameras, card access and system integration. This level includes a mandatory four-week work experience practicum with a licensed alarm company.

The demand is extremely high for graduates of the BCIT Security Systems Technician program. Many students receive job offers before the final week of class, so you could start work immediately after graduation.

After 18 months of work experience, you will be eligible to write the B.C. Certificate of Qualification exam for Security Systems Technician. Once you’ve earned your C of Q, your options expand dramatically. For example, you could start your own business. Or, if you’re considering relocating, you’ll find your credentials are accepted just about anywhere you could think of moving to.

Graduate employment outcomes

The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2020-2022 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2019-2021 graduates and for Degree 2017-2019 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education.
