Overview
Providing you with both an understanding of the breadth and depth of the sector as well as global transferable skills, our two-year course is ideal for anyone seeking to develop a career in construction, including those with a suitable academic background but little construction knowledge. Supported by our brand new construction facilities on campus, you will explore a range of core themes for the sector, from the fundamentals of technology, science and materials to construction drawing, contracts, project management, tendering and procurement.
By completing the construction Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment from University College Birmingham, you will earn a widely recognised Level 5 qualification and be able to pursue a variety of relevant careers, from architectural and engineering roles to planning and surveying. You will also have the opportunity to progress onto the final year of a relevant degree course in order to achieve a full undergraduate degree.Work placements
Work placements are vital for gaining real-life experience and for building your confidence and skills before you finish your course – and they may even lead to a job when you graduate. Other requirements
General requirements
- 4 GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) including English (Language or Literature) and Maths, or equivalent.
- If you do not have a grade 4/C or above in English and maths and you are under 19, you will be required to study these subjects alongside your vocational subject. After enrolment you will complete an assessment with our teaching team so we can ensure you receive appropriate English and maths support.
- School applicants will be required to provide a good school report, which must include attendance. This will be assessed in conjunction with your qualifications and application during the confirmation of your place at University College Birmingham.
Work experience
We also give equal consideration to applicants who are currently in work and wish to apply to University College Birmingham. To apply, you must have a minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience, demonstrating management or supervisory duties.
