Overview
With increasing awareness of terrorist-related incidents happening across the globe, there has never been a more important time for the criminal justice sector to recruit well qualified, specialist professionals to help overcome the challenges facing society.
This dedicated course in Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime from Canterbury Christ Church University gives you a unique opportunity to study Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime at degree level, helping you to gain specific skills, knowledge and insights needed to enter a career in this challenging field.
You'll be taught by passionate academics with expertise in forensic investigation, criminal investigation, terrorism and international policing. Through teaching and independent study, you'll learn about the complexities of transnational crime as well as counter terrorism and responses to terrorism and political violence from a policing, criminal justice and forensic perspective.
What you'll study
You'll study a range of modules covering areas such as forensic investigation, crime science, criminal investigation, international policing, decision making, terrorism and more.
During the course, you'll make use of the Hydra suite, where you can experience simulations relating to a terrorist or other event and put the theory you have learnt into practice.
The expert teaching team have worked as practitioners or researchers within policing, criminology and related fields. They have an excellent understanding of the core knowledge, skills and personal qualities required for careers in the sector. They will help you to understand yourself as a professional and provide you with opportunities to develop your personal and professional skills, such as problem solving, critical evaluation, communication and presentation skills, and the ability to work independently as well as in teams.
The academics will also support you with gaining practical and applied experience through community volunteering, to help you understand the significance of how knowledge of a community directly impacts on the way transnational crime can be tackled.
If you decide to follow a career in policing then you will be able to apply for jobs within the police service. Once recruited, you will be required to undertake a diploma in policing within the first two years.
Your future career
On completion of your degree, there are a range of routes open to you. In 2018, the British Government announced that counter terrorism police funding was to increase by around £50 million to £757 million, a rise of 7%. This is in recognition of the changing threat from terrorism and to ensure counter terrorism policing has the resources needed to respond and keep the public safe.
You could decide to apply to join the police, as a graduate, as there is a pathway that allows those with a degree to enter the profession and undertake a further postgraduate qualification within the first two years to be accredited.
Entry via a ‘normal’ route would mean that there would be no compulsion for you to specialise in counter terrorism related work unless and until you wanted to. In addition, there are currently other exciting opportunities that focus on building bridges and investigating risk within the community roles within the police.
