Overview
The Medicine degree offered by the University of York combines patient-centred teaching, clinician-led problem based learning, rigorous academic study grounded in the sciences, and regular clinical experience from the third week of your first year.
Quick Facts:
- Innovative, distinctive, and specifically designed to meet the challenges of 21st century healthcare, our Medicine programme truly prepares you for life as a doctor.
- Here, you will develop the superior clinical and problem solving skills, and confident, empathetic approach to delivering brilliant care that Hull York medical school graduates are known for.
- As a partnership between the Universities of York and Hull, and NHS trusts across our region, we are able to offer a rarely matched breadth of clinical experience. And as a member of both universities, you’ll enjoy access to the best facilities, support networks, research opportunities and academic expertise that each institution offers.
- When you receive your offer to study with us, you will be allocated a home campus of either the University of Hull or the University of York, where you will be based for the first two years of your programme.
- Regardless of your location, you will follow exactly the same curriculum and experience the same level of expertise and skills from your clinical and academic tutors.
- From your third year onwards, you will be on clinical placements at hospital sites, GP surgeries and community settings across the region.

Years 1 and 2
- In Phase I, problem based learning (PBL) sits at the heart of the curriculum, providing a patient-centred context for your training.
- Each week, under the guidance of your PBL tutor – who is an experienced clinician – your PBL group will identify what you need to know to understand a hypothetical patient case.
Years 2 and 3
- In Phase II, which is years three and four of the programme, you will experience full-time clinical placements in GP surgeries and community settings (primary care) and hospitals (secondary care).
Years 4 and 5
- In Phase III, which is the final year of the programme, your clinical placement rotations will continue throughout the region in primary and secondary care settings, where even more emphasis will be placed on your being a member of a multidisciplinary medical team, gaining experience of on-call and out-of-hours duties.
