Overview

Within this Fine Art - Computational Arts (Hons) programme from the University of the Arts London (UAL) you will explore how technologies influence art and culture.

Through a series of projects, you will be introduced to generative art, CGI, games engines, machine learning, virtual reality, and digital fabrication. In addition, you will be able to access expertise and workshops across fine art, giving you the opportunity to combine digital practices with other crafts such as printmaking, casting, and woodworking.

The course will enable you to explore how emerging computational tools can be applied to the arts and be transformed through them. You will critically embrace and question computational technologies, as well as use them as artistic tools to address and express wider cultural concerns and concepts. Through lectures and tutorials, you will have the chance to engage with discourse and matters that contextualise and support your practice.

What to expect

• You will explore human computer interaction, artificial intelligence and machine learning
• Engage with debates around digital citizenship, ‘the cyborg’ and big data in order to articulate and contextualise your practice in an ethical, relevant and sustainable way
• You will draw upon creative computing technologies and discourses to develop a fine art practice that explores the understanding of time and space
• Your time to be divided between the fine art studios and the Creative Computing Institute (CCI), with some of your technical teaching taking place within the CCI
• Structured activities to expand your awareness of the digital possibilities for fine art as an expanded field of practice
• Practical skills-enhancing workshops that will introduce you to the principles of creative coding
