Program Overview

The B.F.A. in Studio Art from Ohio University is comprised of the following areas of concentration:

Ceramics

From hand building to wheel throwing, this program will fully equip you with the techniques and skills needed for contemporary and non-traditional approaches to ceramics.

Painting + Drawing

The Painting + Drawing program is based in the belief that painting and drawing are a language that upholds tradition while constantly seeking experimentation. In a supportive and challenging atmosphere, you'll be asked to question intentions, investigate and expand your ideas of painting and drawing.

Photography + Integrated Media

Our Photography program builds on the legacy of the historically renowned Clarence White School of Photography in New York, which was re-established at Ohio University in 1948. The program focuses on photographic practice in its most inclusive and experimental manifestations. The curriculum and faculty will encourage you to experiment with a wide variety of processes and platforms, ranging from black and white photography, to digital imaging and video, to interdisciplinary practice.

Printmaking

Our goal is to help you become a diverse and exceptional artist by creating an environment promoting critical dialogues that investigate contemporary art issues as well as the process of creating art. Key to this environment is our dedicated faculty and a strong mentoring program that also provides one-on-one guidance between graduate and undergraduate students.

Sculpture + Expanded Practice

The Sculpture + Expanded Practice program is rooted in the creation of immersive works and contemporary sculpture. You’ll learn fabrication and reductive modes in a variety of materials to explore the use of space. You’ll also create installations, environmental alterations, social-interventions, performance events, and collaborative projects.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

B.F.A in Studio Art majors are competitive in art-related careers and experiences, such as: studio artist, artist-in-residence, museum and gallery work, graduate study, studio assistant, commissioned artwork, solo/group exhibitions, entrepreneurs, studio co-ops, grant writers, community project leaders, public artwork competitions, and work in other creative fields.

Students should contact the Area Chair of their chosen concentration to discuss the application requirements and submit their portfolio of studio work for review by the deadline.
Upload 10 images that document your best original works of art in any media. Video/audio clips are also acceptable. Include detail shots or alternate views only if necessary for that artwork.
Academic records from every institution you have attended, with a certified or attested translation if the original document is not in English.

International Baccalaureate Curriculum

For students studying an International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, we generally expect an average of 5 out of 7 on your college-preparatory curriculum. IB Higher Level examinations may also be eligible for transfer credit.
