Overview
This highly practical course follows a 'learn by doing' approach, where you'll be guided by industry practitioners as you develop skills across a range of specialities, including multi-camera studio and live OB (outside broadcast), drama and documentary production, sports, music, and factual entertainment.
The Television and Studio Production (Hons) degree at Solent University is ideal for undergraduates interested in pursuing a career in the creative industries.
Students have access to:
- the cutting-edge media academy, featuring 4K camera technology, sound and lighting kits, over 70 editing suites, three high-end TV studios, and a fully equipped outside broadcast vehicle.
- the virtual production lab with an LED volume virtual production screen, used on major productions such as The Batman (2022).
- Solent Productions and Solent TV, our in-house production agencies, providing opportunities to gain a wide range of work experience for your professional showreel. We have established links with the industry, including partnerships with ITV, the BBC, Glastonbury, and Camp Bestival.
- a network of industry alumni who now work for leading organisations such as the BBC, Amazon, Sky Sports, Apple TV, Channel Four, and more.
Career
The UK television industry revenue in 2022 was around £20 billion, and in 2018 there was £1.5 billion investment in high-end television production, the highest since records began.
With the expansion of digital platforms, on demand services, rise in UK production and exports around the world, there has never been a better time to work in television.
The university brings in a huge array of guest speakers from all corners of the industry. Recent speakers include producers John Lloyd (QI, Blackadder), Sabrina Sutherland (Twin Peaks), Kate Beal (Woodcut Media), Rob Butterfield (Ricochet TV), Nick O’Dwyer (Landmark Films) and Samantha Brewington (IMG Productions). - 104-120 UCAS tariff points
- A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM or BTEC Diploma at D*D, a T-Level Merit, or equivalent, which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 104 UCAS points.
- Direct entry into the second or third years may be considered for this course.
- UK applicants will be invited to attend an interview.
- Applicants from outside the UK will be interviewed by video call or telephone.
- Applicants over the age of 21 may be considered based on relevant experience, without having the required tariff points.
