This Carpentry and Renovation Techniques programme from Humber Polytechnic is designed to introduce you to both the practical experience necessary for trade regulations and the academic requirements of carpentry trade certification. You will gain a solid understanding of the fundamental technical elements of the carpentry trade.

You will learn health and safety practices and perform building construction and renovation tasks in compliance with contracts, building code, laws and ethical practices. These practices will be taught in light of established sustainability practices. You will learn to safely operate tools and assist in the preparation of estimations. Essential learnings also include time management, team work and problem solving.

Graduates may find employment as an apprentice general carpenter, typically specializing in single-family, townhome, and condominium building and remodeling.
Based on a 2017-2019 employment outlook, the Canadian government’s Department of Employment and Social Development (EDSC) estimates that employment gains in the construction sector will be strong in the Greater Toronto Area due to labour demands resulting from expansions and retirements.
In the next ten years, Build Force Canada estimates that those retiring from the sector will create the largest demand for new skilled carpenters, construction trades helpers and labourers, and contractors and supervisors. The significant loss of skilled labour, combined with the need to prepare the next generation of supervisors and managers, and the time required for new entrants to acquire new skills and experience are the dominant challenges that Ontario, and the rest of Canada, will face up until 2025.
