Overview
The Labour and Employment Relations program offered by The University of the West Indies examines strategic responses which can inform and lend positive support to the public sector and private sector decision-making systems with regard to national, regional and international forces which impact on or have implications for employment policy, industrial/labour relations and labour legislation.
Students at Labour and Employment Relations program offered by The University of the West Indies will:
- know about principles and practices of Labour and Employment Law.
- be able to explain the role of law in labour and employment relations,
- be able to explain the evolution of labour and employment legislation in the region and the implications for current employment relations,
- be able to explain the social legislation governing collective bargaining,
- be able to explain the scope, nature and purpose of protective legislation such as those governing human rights and employment standards,
- be able to explain the major pieces of Jamaican labour legislation especially the Labour Relations and Industrial Disputes Act (LRIDA),
- be able to explain how industrial relations practice has been changed by the passing of the LRIDA,

General requirements
- A minimum of five (5) subjects including English Language and Mathematics at the CXC General or GCE O’Level and any two (2) or more A’Level or CAPE courses. OR
- CXC General, GCE O’Level or CAPE and other tertiary level qualifications
- Where students have been accepted without CXC/GCE O’Level Mathematics, they will be required to successfully complete EC08A (Pre-University Mathematics) by the completion of their Level I Programme.
