Overview
The Zoology with Industrial or Professional Experience course from The University of Manchester will help you to understand the behaviour, structure and evolution of animals. Zoologists use a wide range of approaches to do this, from genetics to molecular and cellular biology, as well as physiological processes and anatomy, whole animals, populations, and their ecology.
As such, you will study fundamental concepts from a range of disciplines in your first year before going on to study more specialised zoology topics in your second and final years.Field studies form an important part of our teaching and you will attend two field courses - one in the first year and one in the second year - including the possibility of visiting South Africa.
Placements range from research project work to roles in education, the biotechnology industry and science communication.
Career opportunities
The significant and relevant work experience gained during the year of industrial/professional experience makes graduates of this course especially attractive to employers.
Many of our graduates secure jobs as researchers working in universities, pharmaceutical and bioscience companies, and institutes.
The transferable skills you will develop will also leave you well equipped for a wide range of careers outside the lab.
Many zoology students go on to work in conservation projects around the world. A number of graduates are now involved in such programmes in the UK and South Africa.
Other popular career choices include working in zoos and museums.
