Overview
In 2003, there were approximately 6.3 billion people living on the planet and 500 million Internet connected devices. By 2020 there was 50 billion connected devices. Known as the Internet of Things (IoT), everything that can benefit from a network connection will have one.
In the IoT environment your phone will control your world. Late home from work, your phone will turn on the heating, check the fridge and choose a recipe based on those ingredients. It may tell you what additional ingredients you need and where you can find them. When you arrive home, your phone will automatically unlock your door, turn on the lights and suggest a route for that run you were planning.
Today the app economy in Europe employs 1.8 million people. It is estimated that 94.4 billion apps were downloaded globally last year. Connected device control is now an integral part of mobile app development. The aim of this exciting new degree is to provide a multidisciplinary undergraduate education by developing specific expertise and comprehensive training in the key areas relevant to the emerging Internet of Things: mobile app development, connected device programming and software development/engineering.
The goal is to produce qualified and well-rounded graduates capable of working in a range of IT positions such as Internet of Things mobile app developers, programmers, system integrators and system validators.
Career Opportunities for the Software Design with Digitalisation from Technological University of the Shannon
This programme provides excellent employment opportunities for graduates. Historically there has been a significant shortage of graduates in the ICT area. This shortage has been compounded by the increase in mobile app development since 2009. The shortage will only be exacerbated by the emergence of the Internet of Things; there was a three-fold increase to 50 billion devices connected to the internet as of 2020.
