Overview
At the Physics Mphys course offered by the University of Southampton , your studies and practical work will be improved by expertise in areas such as photonics, astronomy, particle physics and quantum mechanics.
As part of your course you’ll:
- get a thorough training in the theories of physics and astronomy
- develop problem-solving skills to test theories of physics
- do an individual dissertation in year 3
- spend time embedded in one of our research groups and do an extended research project in year 4
Specialist facilities include:
- an observatory with high-spec telescopes
- a clean room for fabrication at the atomic level
- the Optoelectronics Research Centre - one of the world’s leading institutes for photonics research
If you’re a high-performing student, you may also be invited to join one of our flagship programmes. These are 4-year, MPhys Masters courses:
- Particle Physics with Research Year Abroad
- Physics with Industrial Placement
- Physics with Year of Experimental Research
If you’d like to mix socially with Physics and Astronomy students, you can join the Physics Society (Physoc) and the Astronomy Society (Astrosoc). The Physics department also hosts the award-winning Physics Women’s Network, open to all genders.
Physics offers an academic scholarship scheme worth up to £20,000, plus an unconditional offer based on a competitive exam taken at applicant visit days.

General requirements
One of the following:
- A-levels: A*AA-AAA including physics (minimum grade A) and either mathematics or further mathematics (minimum grade A)
- International Baccalaureate Diploma: Pass, with 38-36 points overall, with 19-18 points required at Higher Level, including 6 at Higher Level in mathematics (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation) and 6 at Higher Level in physics
- BTEC: D*-D in the BTEC National Extended Certificate plus grades AA-A*A in A-level physics and A-level mathematics or further mathematics.
