Overview
The Mathematics Education programme at Acadia University offers a unique integrated pathway for students who wish to combine their passion for numerical logic with a professional career in teaching. This comprehensive five-year course allows undergraduates to earn both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education concurrently through a collaborative partnership between the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the School of Education.
Students enter this specialised stream by applying during their initial year of study at the institution. Following the successful completion of the first year, candidates are formally admitted to the integrated track, with a subsequent progress review occurring at the end of the third year to ensure continued eligibility for the professional education component.
Why Mathematics Education at Acadia University?
Choosing this programme provides students with early access to professional teacher training while maintaining the high standards of a traditional science degree. The curriculum is designed to foster strong analytical abilities and intellectual rigour, qualities that are highly valued in the primary and secondary education sectors. Small class sizes and frequent student-faculty interaction create a supportive environment for tackling complex mathematical problems.
The university provides excellent facilities and a dedicated learning community in Wolfville, where numeracy is treated as a high priority. By integrating the two degrees, the organisation allows students to streamline their path to teacher certification, making them highly sought after by employers across various educational boards. The distinctive teaching features focus on turning keen problem solvers into effective communicators who can inspire the next generation of learners.
