The University of Rome Tor Vergata was founded in 1982. It is ranked among the Top 100 less than 50 years old Universities in the world by QS© and Times Higher Education©. A public university with high teaching and research standards, in little more than 30 years Tor Vergata has become one of the most Important Italian universities. Our University offers 12 programmes entirely taught in English.



The University takes its name from the 14th Century farmhouse "Turris Virgatae" that was owned by the Roman noble family of Annibaldi, whose remains lie beneath Villa Gentile on campus. In 1982, in a South-East district of the city of Rome, the University was founded by a group of brilliant professors and young fellow researchers, and doctor Enrico Garaci became the first rector.


  • The University of Rome Tor Vergata is structured in 6 Schools (Economics; Law; Engineering; Humanities and Philosophy; Medicine and Surgery; Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences) which are organised in 18 Departments.
  • Moreover, Tor Vergata teaching encompasses 150 post lauream courses (advanced training courses, 1st and 2nd LevelVocational Master) and 50 specialisation schools.
  • The offered training covers more than 200 professional figures and possible career opportunities.


The following research fields represent some excellence sectors at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”:

  • Study of genomic risk in complex and multifactorial diseases, with particular reference to cardiovascular and gastro-intestinal diseases. As far as these research fields are concerned, a recent discovery by a research team of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” must be named: a new and important experimental therapy for Crohn’s disease, i.e. a chronic, disabling bowel disease;
  • ICT (development of 5th-generation telcom nets, i.e. 5G);
  • Computer security, ICT and precision medicine;
  • Sustainable development, renewable energies. Considering overarching research projects for technologies linked to energy production and storage, a relevant example is photovoltaic cell development: it deals with 4th-generation cells operating with far higher efficiency when compared to traditional solar panels.

Student services

An International Students Office provide students with all the information about Study Visa and on-line assessments, as well as general information about the Italian University System. Furthermore, all the courses held in English at Tor Vergata have their own Programme Office, looking after students before their arrival and during their career. For all the procedures concerning studying abroad for exchanging semesters, students can refer to the Erasmus+ Office or the International Relations Office. Finally, a Welcome Office is available for students providing information about programmes, accommodation, fees, life in Roma, and scholarships.

Housing services

Immersed in the greenery of Tor Vergata neighbourhood, CampusX Rome offers its residents an opportunity to reach their University buildings on foot. Not far from Fiumicino and Ciampino airports and just a few meters from Policlinico di Tor Vergata Hospital.This facility can accommodate about 1200 people with 718 available accommodation solutions (single or double). It offers all necessary services to enjoy your University experience.

Library services

Each School has its own library, offering students hard and soft copies, reading rooms and computer services. A free wi-fi connection is available in every library at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

Tor Vergata has its on-campus Hospital (Policlinico Tor Vergata, PTV), which is one of the most important and innovative Hospitals in Centre Italy.

The University of Rome Tor Vergata has obtained its accreditation at the MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education) in 1982. We have six Schools, each with its own services (libraries, canteens, computer and reading rooms): Economics, Engineering, Humanities, Law, Medicine and Surgery, Sciences. 879 international agreements with partner Universities all over the world, 6 dual degree and 3 join degree programmes enrich our education path.
