History
Sapienza’s story begins in 1303.The university was erected outside of the Vatican walls, and while this did not completely resolve the many issues between the university and the clergy, it surely catalysed a new relation between the City of Rome and the many scholars that arrived at the new university from around the world.
Education
Sapienza’s academic structure is based on 11 Faculties comprising over 60 premier academic and research Departments. Departments, in charge of making decisions about their policies and goals, provide a transformative education and inspire innovative research of service to the nation and to the betterment of society.
The Departments guarantee excellence and diversity of research and research training across all major discipline areas and emerging fields. Their aim is to provide academic leadership and research training, developing strategic partnerships with other universities, with industry around the world and with the European Community.
Research
Scientific research activity at Sapienza covers an extremely broad spectrum of disciplines, reaching levels of excellence in many areas, including archaeology, physics and astrophysics, humanities and cultural heritage, the environment, nanotechnologies, cell and gene therapy, design, aerospace, social and economic sciences. Nobel Prize winners and internationally renowned scientists have taught and/or studied at Sapienza.

The Hello Help Desk provides information to foreign students who wish to study, conduct research or participate in internships at Sapienza University. Hello also helps students contact the right offices and people.
The Hello Helpdesk provides students with detailed information based on individual needs both at its office and via telephone, e-mail and social media.
Students can request information on enrolment, undergraduate and graduate degrees, specialisation schools, PhDs, master courses, internships, individual courses and thesis research.
Library services
Sapienza offers 53 distinct libraries that function cooperatively to provide centralized online services, including a catalog, electronic resources, information services, and document exchange. The collections include ca. 2,600,000 modern and ancient books, periodicals, databases, electronic and multimedia resources.
Campus life
The main Sapienza Campus, the “Città universitaria,” was designed by Architect Marcello Piacentini and inaugurated in 1935. It’s a true city within the city where educational activities are integrated with administrative and reception structures, library services and museums.
Besides the historical campus on Piazzale Aldo Moro in the San Lorenzo Neighbourhood, Sapienza has various faculty and department buildings and offices in various areas of Rome, as well as university centres in other areas of the Lazio Regino.
