History
The University of Szeged traces its origins back to 1581 with the foundation of the Academia in Cluj (Kolozsvár). István Báthory, Prince of Transylvania, King of Poland (1571-1586), Grand Duke of Lithuania took measures to establish a Catholic university consisting of two faculties, Arts and Theology.
Education
The University of Szeged is a prestigious higher education institution in Hungary with rich tradition, committed to quality education on all levels including Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral programmes, higher-level vocational and postgraduate specialist trainings, to basic and applied research and development, the fine and performing arts, as well as to quality health care, social responsibility, and the development of entrepreneurship. In line with its tradition, education at the University of Szeged ensures the unity of high-level theoretical foundation and practice, the latter based also on external partnerships.
Research
The 2,500 instructors and researchers at the University of Szeged are actively involved in national and international research projects. We have 19 Doctoral Schools and a numerous internationally renowned research teams. In 4 Faculties at the University, there are 14 research groups supported by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA).
The University of Szeged is a research university, where outstanding research, development and innovation work is conducted. Continuous, strategic basic and applied research is of defining significance. Talent management is a priority task at all levels of training.
Career
The Career Office offers job and internship opportunities to support the professional development of students and recent graduates of the SZTE preparing them for the labour market. As a foreign student you can take part in the Job Fair organized by the Career Office twice a year in József Attila Study and Information Centre where you can meet more than 70 regional and national companies.

University Ranking
Student services
One of the first formal steps in the integration of higher education in Szeged was the creation of a central student services office capable of providing high-level, uniform student services to all faculties and students of the university.
Our task is to carry out all administrative and service activities related to student finances (withdrawals and deposits) and student IDs within the university organization, as well as to participate in the planning, implementation and operation of student services.
Library services
Central Europe’s biggest university library, the SZTE Klebelsberg Library (located in József Attila Study & Information Centre, TIK) has nearly 3 million documents on four floors organized by their respective subjects. Browse the online catalogue, make a storage request from home or renew your books online.
Medical services
The Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical and Pharmaceutical Centre is a global organization established pursuant to a joint resolution passed by the Faculty of General Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Szeged. The Centre successfully coordinates health care related activities in the areas of research and development, clinical and pharmacological examinations.
Campus life
The buildings of the 12 Faculties of the University of Szeged (SZTE) are located in downtown and are scattered around the city of Szeged. This gives the impression of a "City within the City". Szeged is a safe and small town, where students find everything within walking distance. The SZTE's library is ranked in the world's top 50 most amazing libraries and is the largest in Central Eastern Europe.
Sports facilities
The Sport Centre was founded in 2002 to organize the compulsory Physical Education courses and to coordinate sport life at the University of Szeged. There are almost 150 courses to choose from in 55 different sports.
Student clubs
ESN Mentors, as members of a non-governmental, volunteer-based student organisation in Europe, are volunteers who help foreign scholarship students settling down in Szeged. In cooperation with the University, they help newly arrived students starting their academic and social life at SZTE.
I.S.U.S. is an organization created for students by students, with the support of the University of Szeged. They are dedicated to providing a rich, exciting cultural and academic experience through all the disciplines: Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy at the University of Szeged. Some of their events include the international food festival, Halloween parties, trips abroad, the spring barbecue and much more.
Since Hungary is a member of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), it also has EU accreditation. SZTE has been the best university in Hungary for years, according to the international QS World University Rankings.
