Founded in 1988 and recognized by the State, the school is a non-profit organization. L’École de design Nantes Atlantique is an active member of various academic networks and professional organizations: Conférence des Grandes Écoles (top-tier French higher education institutions), COMUE (Higher Education and Research Clusters) of the Universities of Nantes, Angers and Le Mans.


L’École de design Nantes Atlantique offers several types of degree program, depending on the level of studies and the course chosen.

  • a 3-year undergraduate program, in which students specialize in one of 6 options: Interior Architecture, Scenography, Graphic Design, Interaction Design, Product Design or Transportation Design.
  • a 2-year postgraduate course leading to a Master’s Degree in design (MDes) certified by the French Ministry of Higher Education. Postgraduate choose between one of the 10 cross-disciplinary programs offered, including a 2-year curriculum in apprenticeship.
  • Vocational training courses


The development of research activities at L’École de design Nantes Atlantique is grounded in a rationale of interdisciplinarity and pooling of resources with Universities and "Grandes Écoles”. The signature of an agreement with the University of Nantes and its involvement within the regional RFI initiative (Research, Training and Innovation) in Pays de la Loire dedicated to creative industries shows its commitment to developing a concerted scientific policy promoting joint research activities. The shared ambition is to set up an internationally recognized center of excellence, based on a collaboration among academic research partners, leaders in innovation and socio-economic players.


Vocational Training Center for Creation and Innovation (CFA) of L’École de design Nantes Atlantique has 4 main goals:

  • helping students become apprentices in creation-and-innovation-related professions,
  • promoting apprenticeship to young people,
  • enabling young designers-to-be to pursue their studies,
  • accompanying students as they step into the business world.

Within its area of expertise, the Vocational Training Center aims to train designers with sufficient professional skills to find their own voice in the job market in no time.

Library services

Constructed in 1962, the University Library is very typical of libraries of that era. As a result, it needs to be updated to suit modern needs in terms of uses, users and standards.

Student Life

Campus life

Since 1998, L’École de design Nantes Atlantique has been located on the technological campus Atlanpole La Chantrerie, in the northeastern area of Nantes (France), housed in a custom-built facility thanks to the support of local authorities (Nantes Saint-Nazaire Chamber of commerce and industry, the Pays de la Loire regional authorities, the Loire-Atlantique area local council, Nantes Métropole). The only design institution in western France, the school benefits from a unique regional situation.
