School of Social Policy

The School of Social Policy is committed to spanning the divide between academia and practice, and to applying its research through teaching, publications, consultancy and policy advice. As part of this Mission, the School runs what is believed to be the oldest, continually running social work training course in the country, which celebrated its centenary in 2008.

As part of this Mission, the School runs what is believed to be the oldest, continually running social work training course in the country, which celebrated its centenary in 2008.

There are two Departments which make up the School of Social Policy:

The Institute of Applied Social Studies is based within the refurbished Muirhead Tower, offering state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities.

The Health Services Management Centre is based at Park House, located close to the heart of the campus.

The School of Social Policy is proud of its extensive links with unversities and other strategic partners throughout the world. We engage in a wide range of activities including staff and student exchange and collaboration in research and training.

Services

The School of Social Policy comprises the Institute of Applied Social Studies (IASS) and the Health Services Management Centre (HSMC).

Institute of Applied Social Studies

The Institute of Applied Social Studies is located within the newly refurbished Muirhead Tower and enjoys hi-spec, hi-tech teaching facilities. Close to the grand traditional redbrick buildings of Aston Webb, the Institute is conveniently located on our leafy Edgbaston campus.

Health Services Management Centre

HSMC has been based at Park House since it was established in 1972. It was built for John Hawkins a local screw manufacturer and is an imposing building, set in extensive grounds near Edgbaston Pool and the University campus.
