History

Johns Hopkins University, founded in 1836, is America’s first research university, with the Whiting School of Engineering dating back to 1913. At Johns Hopkins Engineering, we advance data- and science-driven engineering discovery, innovation, and systems applications to help everyone live longer and healthier lives and empower communities and society to thrive even in extreme environments.

Education

Johns Hopkins Engineering provides educational offerings ranging from pre-college summer courses, to undergraduate, graduate, PhD, and professional and executive education. The school features 10 academic departments and more than 26 academic centers and institutes. Learners at all levels benefit from renowned faculty who are experts in their fields.  Instructors come from across the university as well as from the JHU Applied Physics Lab – the largest university-affiliated research entity in the US.  We offer more than 70 degree-granting academic programs, while the Executive and Professional Education’s non-degree portfolio offers dozens of flexible options from individual courses to full certificates. 

Research

Johns Hopkins Engineering has more than 25 research centers and institutes spanning across university divisions, as well as global partnerships with industry, government, and other universities. Only here are we able to collaborate with researchers and clinicians at the renowned schools of Medicine, Public Health, Arts and Sciences, and the School of Government Policy in Washington, D.C., as well as the JHU Applied Physics Lab. Notable efforts include the global COVID-19 tracking map, chlorinated water, and the creation of digital twin heart models used for diagnosing and treating cardiac disease. We are leading innovations in areas from bioengineering and robotics to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
