History
The University of Macedonia has a history dating back to 1930. The Department of Accounting and Finance was officially established in 1990. Since then, the Department has introduced several programmes, has received 7 professional accreditations, has signed partnership agreements with international institutions and has a tradition in winning awards in prestigious student competitions.
Education
The Department of Accounting and Finance offers a Greek and an English-Speaking BSc in Accounting and Finance, four MSc programmes in the fields of Accounting, Auditing, Finance and Financial Technology, as well as PhD and Post-Doc positions. Classes for the English BSc will be delivered in 3-hour slots over 13 weeks per semester and in small groups. Students can apply to study a semester abroad (Erasmus) and/or join an Internship programme. Being issued by a public university, graduates will have their BSc title (240 ECTS) automatically recognised by NARIC.
Research
The teaching staff of the BSc in Accounting and Finance engage in research of high international standards. They have published in reputable journals, they have been invited to speak at conferences and public institutions and have engaged in projects for international organizations. Some of the research topics include textual analytics Artificial Intelligence, Business Analytics, Earnings Management, Environment-Society-Governance (ESG) reporting, Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), Banking, Financial Economics, Energy Finance, and so on. Part of this expertise is embedded in teaching, while students have the opportunity to engage in research through supervised dissertations during their final year in the BSc.
Career
The Department of Accounting and Finance prides that its graduates enjoy one of the highest absorption rates in the market. It is indicative that highly profiled firms and consultancy agencies have been recently established in Thessaloniki, actively talent-hunting our graduates. Typical destinations of leavers include positions as accounting and auditing specialists in firms such as Deloitte or PWC, financial and corporate analysts in consultancy firms such as Ernest & Young (EY), investment bankers, tax officers in the public sector, policymakers in regulatory authorities and so on. Most pursue postgraduate studies or even doctoral studies to later pursue academic careers or research positions.

Once you are accepted at the BSc in Accounting and Finance, you will be assigned to a Personal Tutor who will be your first point of contact for academic matters and university-life issues. You will also realize that the University of Macedonia offers a wide range of services to its students. The Foreign Students Support Unit can offer significant help to international students with their smooth transition from their home country to settling in Thessaloniki as full time students. Also, within the University operates a Student Counselling and Support Centre, an Accessibility Unit, a Career Office, an Internship Office, among others, but also an Erasmus Office and a Physical Education Office.
Housing services
The city of Thessaloniki offers affordable options for housing in close proximity to the University Campus (e.g. within a 15-minute walk). While exclusive Student Residences are limited in Thessaloniki, there is a great choice for private housing in the market (for example: spitogatos.gr; xe.gr; spiti24.gr; tospitimou.gr). To spread living costs, you can consider sharing accommodation with another classmate or friend, which should bring down your budget at a very affordable range. Of course, costs will depend on your choices of the apartment, the location or the number of roommates, if any.
Library services
The University houses a high-spec library, featuring personal study areas, a wide collection of international books, online databases and a dedicated PC to explore and download financial data using a professional platform. The Library offers training seminars to students on navigating through the electronic and one site collections as well as on issues of plagiarism and research writing.
ICT services
Both the University and the Department of Accounting and Finance offer IT support. The IT support of the Department deals with issues of student accounts and access and use to the Department’s PCs. The University IT support deals with broader issues that cannot be dealt with locally. The Department also houses its own server, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted remote access.
Medical services
There are two public hospitals in close proximity to the University. AHEPA University Hospital is just a 10-minute walk from the University, while Ippokrateio General Hospital is 20 minutes away walking or just 3 stops using the bus (approximately 5 minutes). Private options are also available near the University.
Campus life
The University of Macedonia is located at the city center and within 15 to 20 minutes distance from landmarks such as the White Tower, the promenade or Thessaloniki, the shops of Tsimiski street or the cafés that are most popular among students. It is also in close proximity to residential areas, meaning that it would be possible to find accommodation within a 10-minute walking distance. It also highly accessible through multiple bus lines and a metro stop right outside the university, due to operate in November 2024. The University is housed in a large building, and includes a café and a student restaurant which several meal options at a low cost.
Sports facilities
The University of Macedonia houses two sports halls inside the main building, including a large basketball court of professional standards. Several fitness and general interest classes are offered (Pilates, Aerobics, Volleyball, Basketball, Muscle Strengthening, Karate, Modern- Classical Dance, Table Tennis, Capoeira Angola, Hip - Hop, Swimming, Argentine Tango, Latin Dances). There is also an area for free weights, orthosomatics and personal exercise. The Physical Education office also organizes outdoor activities such as skiing, mountaineering, hiking etc. During the academic year, internal championships are held for all team sports. A “Sports Day” is organised at the end of each academic year.
Student clubs
The university houses communities where students can further extend their intellect and engage in vocational and self-development activities. These include the student-run, international AIESEC, community where students can contribute in social outcomes, the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) which promotes student mobility and facilitates the settling down of incoming and outgoing students, as well as the UoM Finance Club where students collaborate with firms to deliver consultancy projects and financial analyses. Other popular clubs are the TEDxUniversityofMacedonia and the UoM Chess Club but there is certainly a lot more to explore.

Apart from the demanding and market-relevant curriculum, part of the success of the Department of Accounting and Finance is due to the prestigious accreditations received over the years, collectively for the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
