Democritus University of Thrace (D.U.Th.) was foundedwith the legislative decree no. 37 in July 27th 1973 and started to run in the academic year 1974-1975 with the admission of its first students to the Department of Civil Engineering in Xanthi and the Department of Law in Komotini.
Aapart from its primary educational and research activity, its running via its multiple campuses, at first in the cities of Xanthi and Komotini, and later on in Alexandroupolis and Orestiada, has essentially participated in the efforts for the economic growth of the Administrative Region of Thrace
The Research and Management Committee of S.A.R.G. is the body that makes decisions and acts independently from the administrative bodies of the university. The Committee is formed in all Higher Education Institutions upon Rector’s decision and consists of representatives from all Departments while the Vice-Rector of Research is the President.

The administrative and secretarial support of the University, of its Faculties and Departments, in their overall teaching and research activities, is carried out through its administrative services, operating in the city of Komotini where University’s Central Administration is based as well as in the cities of Xanthi, Alexandroupolis and Orestiada, where University sub-units have been established.
For students who fulfill certain social and income-based criteria, the University provides accommodation in Komotini, at the Student Halls of the University Campus (700 beds), as well as at rented apartments.
The premises of Democritus University of Thrace are dispersed throughout the cities of Komotini, Xanthi, Alexandroupolis and Orestiada.
More specifically, the University Campus in Komotini is located at a distance of 5 km away from the center of the city and spreads in an area of 2, 985,000 m2, of which 77,028m2 is a building area.
Τhis part of the campus houses the Law School, the School of Physical Education and Sports, the Department of Economic Sciences and the Department of Greek Language and Literature, the Administration Building, the Central Amphitheatre, the Restaurant, the Student Residences, the Swimming Pool and the Indoors Gym.
The Student Union of the Department of History and Ethnology, Herodotos, was founded in 1992 and officially represents the student body towards the university administration. The supreme body of the S.U. is the General Assembly of the students. The officers of the S.U. are elected annually by the entirety of the student body.
