The seminary began because Venerable Leo John Dehon, a French priest and the founder of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart, valued education, had a passion for the priesthood and was committed to social justice. The seminary program was established at Sacred Heart Monastery in 1932 with the introduction of philosophy and theology courses.
Sacred Heart offers an accredited Master of Arts Program open to laity, a robust ESL program serving religious communities and dioceses around the world, and other programs and educational opportunities.
The Global Student Satisfaction Awards empower students across the globe to determine the best universities of 2019. By rating institutions on a scale from 1 to 5, on multiple studies-related questions, we found the top educators in the world.
The Leo Dehon Library houses a comprehensive theological and scriptural collection of over 100,000 volumes in a light, inviting space. The collection has special strengths in the areas of church history, social justice, Mozarabic liturgy, and canon law, and is enhanced by extensive holdings in philosophy, psychology, and the arts.
Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology (SHSST) is accredited by the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in the United States and Canada. The seminary's Master of Divinity and Master of Arts degree programs are approved.
