History
The Curtis Institute of Music opened on October 13, 1924. It fulfilled the fondest dream of Mary Louise Curtis Bok, the only child of Philadelphia-based Louisa Knapp and Cyrus H. K. Curtis, whose Curtis Publishing Company produced two of the most popular magazines in America: the Saturday Evening Post and the Ladies' Home Journal.

In order to ensure the continuation of collaborative projects, learning, and performances uniquely championed by Dr. Rosalyn Tureck, the Tureck Bach Research Institute merged with the Curtis Institute of Music in 2015, gifting its assets and intellectual property rights to the school and combining two respected institutions dedicated to education and performance at the highest level.

Student services
New students are provided an overview of public safety each year at orientation. Everyone in the Curtis community is encouraged to educate themselves about the local crime statistics and to report crime incidents. Safety is a shared responsibility and everyone on campus is expected to exercise good safety habits. A Curtis photo ID is issued to all Curtis students, faculty, and staff. Everyone is expected to carry their Curtis ID at all times.
Housing services
Upon acceptance to Curtis, you will receive a housing application in the mail. Included in the application are questions about your personal preferences, habits, lifestyle, and the attributes that you feel are important in your living environment. This information is carefully reviewed to ensure that you are matched with compatible suitemates. Students also have the flexibility to request living with a specific student or students.
Library services
The Rock Resource Center of the Curtis Institute of Music contains more than 100,000 music scores, books, and recordings for study and performance.
Medical services
At Curtis we are committed to supporting our students in all areas of wellness. Wellness resources include:
- Counseling with licensed psychologists
- Annual wellness day and health fair
- Annual Student Wellness Survey
- Musician injury recovery and prevention – case management and oversight
- Annual flu vaccines administered on campus to all Curtis students (at no cost)

The Curtis Institute of Music is largely housed in stately mansions that pair 19th-century charm with 21st-century amenities. They have a distinguished architectural history.
