History
The University was established by an act of the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature in 1901 as the Southwestern Normal School. The Normal School was authorized to offer two years of training and four years of preparatory work for students who were not qualified for college admission. The first classes met in 1903.

Career Services – exists to provide a number of services to students in selecting a major, securing internships, part-time positions, summer work opportunities and full-time employment upon graduation. They can be found in Stf. 209 or contact them at ext. 3233.

Student services
SWOSU is home to more than 160 international students from 30 countries – literally from all around the globe. International Student Affairs, provides immigration services, international admission services, and is ready to help international students in any way or visit with anyone who wants to talk about anything international. Dr. Randy Beckloff is our campus International Student Affairs Coordinator, his office is located in the Administration Building, room 208-A. His extension is 6172.
Housing services
Students requiring special accommodations due to a learning disability or physical limitation must notify the Dean of students prior to the end of the first week of classes.
Library services
Call (580)774-3730 for questions about the Al Harris Library's schedule. To contact the Oscar McMahan Library in Sayre call (580)928-5533 x2185. Both libraries close for SWOSU holidays.
Medical services
Health care facilities are becoming some of the most complex and diversified institutions in our society. At the forefront of these activities is the health care administrator.
Campus life
We are delighted to have approximately 220 international students on our campus from around the globe. International students are valued members of the SWOSU community!
The mission of the Office of International Student Affairs (ISA) is to support international students throughout their relationship with SWOSU—from admission to graduation and beyond. Our goal is to work with each student for their personal, academic, and career success.
Sports facilities
The Southwestern Oklahoma State University Sports Information department is responsible for providing public and media relation services for the Bulldogs’ 12 athletic programs. Sports Information Director Doug Self is the primary contact for each SWOSU Athletic program. The following guidelines have been established to help provide a professional working environment for members of the media wishing to follow the Bulldogs.
Student clubs
The Voice of the Students! The Student Government Association (SGA) is the governing body of SWOSU students. Student fees fund the operations of the SGA, and student-elected officers oversee the expenditure of those funds. The three branches of the SGA (Executive, Legislative, and Judicial) work together to lead students by serving them. The SGA is the advocate for student interests, a powerful voice for change and progress, and a dedicated provider of student services and resources.
Accreditation
The Oklahoma State Legislature in 1949 again changed the name, this time to Southwestern State College, without altering the broad scope of its purposes and education objectives. Since that time there has been full accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools).
