In 1971, Dr. Henry H.L. Hu and Dr. Chung Chi Yung founded Shue Yan on Sing Woo Road, Happy Valley, in response to the acute shortage of tertiary places for local secondary school leavers aspiring for a university education. In 1976, Shue Yan College was registered under the Post-secondary Colleges Ordinance (Cap. 320).

The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) aims to provide an open, encouraging, with a supportive learning environment, in order to initiate students a healthy, well-balanced life. OSA provides a variety of services to students so that they can fully develop their potential, enjoy their campus life and complete their 4-year tertiary study successfully.
Student residence means not only an on-campus living environment that allows students to pursue academic success, but also a community-living environment for student ’s skills advancement and personal development. Hong Kong Shue Yan University strives to create a healthy, pleasant and harmony living-learning environment for the residents.
The Hong Kong Shue Yan University Library Complex building is multi-functional and has 19 storeys. It includes seminar rooms, conference rooms, research centres, a podium, as well as a parking lot and accommodation facilities for overseas scholars.
Computing Services Centre is a service department of the Hong Kong Shue Yan University with responsibility for academic and administrative computing. Working in partnership with the faculties, staff and students, provides current computing technologies, IT infrastructure and IT services to facilitate and support teaching, learning, research and administration.
Educational programmes on health e.g. sleep hygiene and smoking, and vaccinations such as influenza are organised by CS in each year to help students address concerns on their physical health and maintain a healthy life style. Undergraduate Residence mainly consists of shared rooms (2-person, 3-person, 4-person), with 2-person room and 3-person room being the majority. Residential period and residence fee are calculated by semester. Shared rooms’ converted monthly rate is between HKD 1,300 and 1,900 (inclusive). In addition, there are limited number of single occupancy rooms available.
There are fourteen committees in Hong Kong Shue Yan University, in which the Student Affairs Committee and the Library Management & Development Committee stated that there are three student representatives come from the election, that is, each Faculty has one representative. Student Discipline Committee, the Student Finance Committee, Academic Board, Quality Assurance Committee and Panel Against Sexual Harassment stated that there is also one student representative comes from the election, so as to enhance the openness of the University policy, and to provide the way for the student involvement in decision-making of the University policy. Thus, the Student Representatives Election will start on first semester.
The Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) is an independent statutory body responsible for overseeing academic standards of degree programmes in higher education and the vocational sector.
The academic standards of degree programmes are set out in the Qualifications Framework (QF) by the Education Bureau (EDB), which prescribes standards for seven levels of education using Generic Level Descriptors (GLDs). The HKCAAVQ supports the Qualifications Framework with a Four-stage Quality Assurance Process to ensure GLDs are met.
