Needham, Massachusetts, United States
Olin was founded to radically change engineering education with the goal of fueling the technical innovation needed to solve the world’s complex future challenges.

History

Franklin W. Olin (1860-1951) was an engineer, entrepreneur and professional baseball player. Raised in Vermont lumber camps and lacking a high school diploma, he qualified himself for entrance to Cornell University through self-instruction. At Cornell he majored in civil engineering and was captain of the baseball team.

Education

Undergraduate Engineering - Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Engineering (with concentrations in bioengineering, computing, design and robotics).

Research

One important facet of an Olin faculty member's role is to engage in meaningful externally-facing work through activities such as research, entrepreneurship, technical and educational consulting, creative work and more. Our externally-facing work is valued for the impact it has on outside stake-holders such as research communities, companies, other universities, the general public and others. The majority of our faculty engage in research as part of their “external impact” portfolios, and they typically involve groups of undergraduate students.

Career

The Office of Post-Graduate Planning assists students and alumni in their journey to enrich their educational experiences, careers and lives in order to make lifelong contributions to society. Our career center helps identify meaningful research, internship, scholarship, fellowship, professional and graduate school opportunities.

Student services

Student Goverment at Olin is comprised of a governing body, known as the Council of Olin Representatives (CORe), as well as four Student Experience Organizations. The purpose of each Student Experience Organization is unique, as they individually have their own missions and functions, however, each of these orgnaizations is deemed vital to the education and college experience of the student body as they all address aspects of Olin's central philosophies, founding precepts, and goals.

Housing services

  • East Hall
  • West Hall

Library services

  • The Olin College Library advocates discovery, connection, and inclusion for all members of our community. We aim to enrich the educational experience for our students through free access to information and equipment.
  • Our library is open to the public during staffed hours, typically 9 AM - 5 PM Monday through Friday.

ICT services

Olin's extensive IT infrastructure is what you should expect from an engineering college for the 21st Century. The academic buildings feature fully networked classrooms that will allow professors and students to use the latest instructional technologies as part of the learning process. The design is flexible enough so that new technologies can be incorporated as they develop.

Medical services

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires students to be covered by a comprehensive health insurance program. Accordingly, the College makes available a general health insurance program to meet the standards set by the Commonwealth. The insurance carrier is Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

Campus life

  • Olin College of Engineering is nestled on 70 acres in Needham, Massachusetts, a suburb 14 miles west of Boston. The nearby campuses of Babson College, Wellesley College and Brandeis University, together with the proximity of Boston and Cambridge, afford students easy access to one of the world’s most bustling educational and technological hubs.
  • The campus’ five main buildings curve around a central green space that we call “the Oval,” which provides a space for students and faculty  to come together.

Sports facilities

  • Residence Hall Gyms
  • Intramural Sports and Babson Facilities
  • Club Sports and Competitive Teams
  • Area Trails

Student clubs

  • The Council Of Olin Representatives (Core)
  • Committee For Clubs And Organizations (Cco)
  • The Honor Board
  • Support, Encourage, And Recognize Volunteerism (Serv)

Accreditation

Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. Accreditation of an institution of higher education by the New England Association indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality periodically applied though a peer review process.
