About

History

Founded in 1881 and named for Civil War general Francis Marion Drake, the University boasts more than 130 years of proud history and many traditions.

Education

Our undergraduates choose from more than 70 majors, minors, and concentrations; combine majors; or create their own majors. Graduate students choose from more than 20 master’s, doctoral, and professional degrees.

Research

The Drake Curriculum provides the foundation for undergraduate education, ensuring exposure to a broad selection of areas of inquiry. Other hallmarks of a Drake education include the Honors Program, First-Year Seminars, and World Languages and Cultures. Students also have extensive opportunities to study abroad, complete internships, and take part in independent research.

Extracurricular highlights include more than 160 active student organizations and a thriving Division I athletics program. Among co-curricular opportunities, students take advantage of many options for developing leadership abilities and engaging in service-learning.

Student services

Drake’s centers and institutes focus the expertise of Drake’s faculty and students on issues of scholarly and societal importance. Work in the centers shows Drake at its best, applying insights and ideas from the academy in practical and productive ways with a substantive impact. For students, the centers provide the chance to understand key contemporary issues and take advantage of distinctive opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Library services

At Drake, our libraries are academic landmarks that stand at the heart of the University’s mission. They are also:

Medical services

The American Republic Student Health Center is an on-campus medical facility offering quality healthcare to full-time Drake students.

Student Life

Campus life

In each of Drake’s eight residence halls you will find all the makings of a great home away from home: nicely furnished rooms, air conditioning, cable and wireless internet, cable TV, common areas for hanging out with friends, and kitchens for cooking up a special treat.

Every residence hall floor has its own resident assistant (RA), available as a friend and resource, and you will find plenty of organized activities that provide the chance to meet people. You may also find that your new home comes with some proud old traditions, one reason each building has its own distinctive personality.

Sports facilities

Sports are a big part of life at Drake—from the chance to join the throng at a football game to representing your hall in intramural soccer or badminton.

Drake’s NCAA Division I athletics program boasts a proud history. Bulldog teams have won 59 Missouri Valley Conference championships, including a league-leading nine titles in men's cross country and eight in women's tennis. Drake women's basketball team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament seven times in the last 14 years.? And, in 2001, Drake became just the 18th school in NCAA I-AA history to achieve 500 or more victories in football.

Student clubs

Fortunately, with more than 160 clubs and organizations, you are virtually guaranteed to find options that fit your interests, talents, and goals. And if you don’t, you can start your own club. All it takes is a good idea and some like-minded friends ready to join in.

Not sure where to begin? Try our Activities Fairs. Each fall and spring, representatives of campus groups come out to sign up new members. Wander from table to table, ask questions, and see what sounds appealing.
