About

History

The Silesian University of Technology was founded on 24 May 1945. The inauguration ceremony of the first academic year was held in Gliwice on 29 October 1945. At the time, there was 2,750 students. Educational curricula and plans were based on the standards from the Lviv Polytechnic.  

Education

15 educational units of the University – 13 faculties and 2 institutes – currently offer almost 60 study programmes and about 200 specialisations, including the whole spectrum of engineering studies. Currently, SUT educates over 18,000 students. The University offers first-cycle studies (engineering and bachelor's degree), second-cycle studies - master's degree, education at doctoral school called "Joint Doctoral School" and postgraduate studies. Studies are conducted in full-time and part-time mode. Candidates have also the opportunity to access education in one of the nearly 30 study programmes in English.  

Research

The Silesian University of Technology is the only university in Silesia to be included in the prestigious group of 10 Polish universities, winners of the "Excellence Initiative-Research University" competition organised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Out of 20 best universities in Poland which were eligible to take part in the competition, the international team of experts selected 10 universities which in 2020-2026 will receive a subsidy increased by 10%. The Silesian University of Technology belongs to this group, which according to the Ministry rules, will receive a total amount of nearly PLN 245,000,000.00 over 7 years.

Services

Student services

The Student Career Office and the Academic Entrepreneurial Incubator are also very active at our university, helping students to find jobs, set up their own company and offering information about available training courses and internships. The Silesian University of Technology regularly organizes job fairs, numerous training courses and workshops, including programmes promoting academic entrepreneurship.

These activities aimed at boosting entrepreneurship among the students of the University are actively supported by the industrial partners, who regularly take part in the above-mentioned events.

Housing services

The campus of the Silesian University of Technology is one of the largest in the country. We have been doing our best for years to improve its infrastructure. Recently, the Silesian University of Technology has completed two stages of thermo modernisation of dorms. The works took place in four buildings: DS. Karolinka, DS. Karlik, DS. Elektron and DS. Strzecha located in Gliwice at Kujawska street. In total the University has nearly 3 thousand bed places in single, double and triple rooms of various standards. There are 11 student houses on the campus of Gliwice. Each campus in Katowice and Zabrze has one student dormitory. Dormitories are located within the Gliwice campus, few minutes’ walk from the Faculties.

Medical services

Public health care providers are usually marked with the NFZ logo.

Prior registration is required in order to get a medical consultation from the doctor. Valid ID card and health insurance policy or EHIC card have to be presented to the medical assistant to complete the registration process. The medical centre which receives SUT’s students and staff members is located close to the SUT’s campus:

Dormitories are located within the Gliwice campus, few minutes’ walk from the Faculties.

Sports facilities

Silesian University of Technology is also an ideal place for sport enthusiasts. There are 28 different sport sections, such as aerobics, karate, judo, badminton, running, mountain cycling, volleyball, basketball, skiing, handball, chess, contemporary dance, table tennis, triathlon. The main University sports facilities are located at the Gliwice campus.

Student clubs

Silesian University of Technology is also an ideal place for sport enthusiasts. There are 28 different sport sections, such as aerobics, karate, judo, badminton, running, mountain cycling, volleyball, basketball, skiing, handball, chess, contemporary dance, table tennis, triathlon. The main University sports facilities are located at the Gliwice campus.

Studying at Silesian University of Technology gives ample opportunities to broaden one’s interests. During the academic year the University is vibrant with activities inspired by Students’ Self-Government and numerous Student Organisations – there are 20 of them, complemented by about 180 scientific associations.

Overall, studying at this University has been wonderful, even with the pandemic, the studies are still going on smoothly, the online learning platform is great and very effective. The school environment is very condusive, with state of the art buildings and very sound academic core.
