Loyola University Maryland

From the time of their founding four-and-a-half centuries ago, Jesuits – beginning with their founder, St. Ignatius Loyola – have had a distinctive way of looking at life.  Their characteristic Ignatian worldview has permeated their educational and spiritual apostolates, and has been shared with hundreds of thousands of women and men formed by Jesuit teaching and pastoral care.

About

History

  • When Jesuit priests founded Loyola in 1852, they looked to the very heart of their order for inspiration in choosing a name.
  • They found their inspiration in St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, and that’s how Loyola—our Loyola—became the first institution of higher education in the United States to bear his name.

Education

  • At Loyola, this means that the curriculum is rigorous and faculty expectations are high. All undergraduates complete the core curriculum which includes courses in English, philosophy, theology, ethics, history, fine arts, foreign language, mathematics, natural science, and social sciences.
  • Students are challenged to understand the ethical dimensions of personal and professional life and to examine their own values, attitudes, and beliefs.
  • The University also offers a Catholic studies program for students interested in expanding their knowledge of the Roman Catholic faith.

Services

Housing services

  • All of the accommodation options available at the Loyola Center are self-catered, meaning students are responsible for preparing their own meals.

The self-catered accommodation have plenty to offer:

  • All students will have their own room;
  • All flats are fully furnished with a shared lounge and kitchen;
  • Usually there are six to ten students per flat;
  • The 24-hour University security team provides out-of-hours support for emergencies
Loyola University Maryland recognizes the importance of providing reasonable accommodations when necessary for students with disabilities to access campus housing and fully participate in the residential experience.

Library services

  • The Loyola Notre Dame Library provides information services and resources to support the academic programs and educational concerns of Notre Dame of Maryland University and Loyola University Maryland.
  • The National Agricultural Library (NAL) is one of five national libraries of the United States.  It houses one of the world's largest collections devoted to agriculture and its related sciences.

Student Life

Campus life

  • We're excited to welcome you to our beautiful campuses. Loyola's Evergreen Campus is located in a residential area of North Baltimore and is the main campus for our undergraduate student community.
  • Loyola’s main campus, affectionately referred to as Evergreen, is located in a residential neighborhood in north Baltimore. It encompasses 81 wooded acres and is an accredited arboretum. Students can often be found studying on the porch of the Humanities building, enjoying the lush Quad, participating in one of countless clubs, or cheering on our Patriot League teams.

Sports facilities

  • Loyola's Club Sport teams bridge the gap between intramurals and varsity athletics, allowing you to enjoy extramural competition without the pressures of highly-structured varsity sports.
  • Clubs are student directed, with members being required to assume responsibility for organizing contests and fundraising activities, while also providing a great opportunity to develop leadership skills. Most club teams compete in leagues against other local and regional teams and some teams even compete in national competitions.

Student clubs

  • Seeking to increase its own diverse nature, Loyola encourages openness to new discoveries, ideas, methods, and perspectives, and it actively encourages and celebrates diversity in all forms.
  • This includes promoting “awareness of and sensitivity toward differences of race, gender, ethnicity, national origin, culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age, and disabilities” as articulated in the University’s current undergraduate and graduate catalogs.

Student Reviews

Shoutout PS dept
Anonymous rated 4 out of 5 stars

Loved my department but felt as if they needed more professors/presence on campus. They also deserve more funding and attention.

Ignatian values
Anonymous rated 5 out of 5 stars

The support from professors was unmatched. I appreciate the relationships I built with my professors for assisting and guiding me through undergrad.

Loyola University Maryland Community
Anonymous rated 5 out of 5 stars

Studying at Loyola University gave me not only the academic challenge I sought, but it brought me in touch in a greater community that acts as an academic family. From the classroom to the line for coffee, it is easier to see that it is a community that cares for themselves and others.
