The institution now known as Southern Oregon University can trace its earliest beginnings to the foundation of the Ashland Academy in 1872, a private preparatory school established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ashland. In 1895, the University was officially renamed Southern Oregon Normal School and held classes on a site located about a mile south of the present campus.
The Office of Institutional Research provides timely and accurate statistical analyses that are integral to the strategic planning process for Southern Oregon University including support for internal decision making and overall institutional effectiveness. The office responds to report and data requests from state, federal, and other external agencies as well as internal constituents of the university.

The SHWC provides primary care and mental health services in an outpatient setting. Licensed, professional staff include but are not limited to: a Family Practice Physician, Family Nurse Practitioners, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurses; and other allied health professionals.

SOU Outdoor Program (OP) advocates the spirit of adventure for students. We offer student led trips throughout the school year for the entire campus community, as well as, high quality camping/rafting/kayaking/backpacking equipment rentals for students and the community. The Outdoor Program is an inclusive campus resource for all students, and is associated with Student Life. The OP also supports all the adventure- based clubs on campus. They were building a new science building during my final year so all of my classes were in the old dormitories that were not set up to house a couple of science classes, let alone the entire department.
