About

History

The institution now known as Southern Oregon University can trace its earliest beginnings to the foundation of the Ashland Academy in 1872, a private preparatory school established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ashland. In 1895, the University was officially renamed Southern Oregon Normal School and held classes on a site located about a mile south of the present campus.

Research

The Office of Institutional Research provides timely and accurate statistical analyses that are integral to the strategic planning process for Southern Oregon University including support for internal decision making and overall institutional effectiveness.  The office responds to report and data requests from state, federal, and other external agencies as well as internal constituents of the university.

Southern Oregon University's Office of Career Connections provides resources to assist students from all academic programs and class years identify and achieve their individual career goals. We welcome all students and embrace opportunities to collaborate with employers, graduate and professional schools, faculty and staff, and student organizations, as well as parents and alumni in order to provide the highest quality of service to our students.

Services

Student services

The Office of Student Support and Intervention (OSSI) offers clinical and behavioral intervention and case management for students who may have support needs related to health, mental health, significant environmental concerns, or support system concerns.

Library services

As the cultural and intellectual center of Southern Oregon University, Hannon Library inspires a passion for learning. To support the mission of the university, an inclusive campus community dedicated to student success, intellectual growth, and responsible global citizenship.

Medical services

The SHWC provides primary care and mental health services in an outpatient setting. Licensed, professional staff include but are not limited to: a Family Practice Physician, Family Nurse Practitioners, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurses; and other allied health professionals.

Student Life

Campus life

With a campus of over 6,100 students and a culture of engaged faculty, SOU supports strong, meaningful connections and emphasizes inclusion and sustainability. SOU strives to guide all learners to become knowledgeable and innovative, creating lives of purpose.

Sports facilities

SOU Outdoor Program (OP) advocates the spirit of adventure for students. We offer student led trips throughout the school year for the entire campus community, as well as, high quality camping/rafting/kayaking/backpacking equipment rentals for students and the community. The Outdoor Program is an inclusive campus resource for all students, and is associated with Student Life.  The OP also supports all the adventure- based clubs on campus. If you're interested in getting outside, come by and check us out! 

Student clubs

Student clubs and organizations serve as a means for connecting with other students, providing leadership development and opportunities, appreciating diversity, encouraging civic engagement, enhancing your college experience. There are many privileges associated with being a registered club/organization at SOU.

Accreditation

Southern Oregon University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). The Department of Chemistry programs have earned the approval of the American Chemical Society. The programs of the School of Education are accredited by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission. The Department of Music is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

They were building a new science building during my final year so all of my classes were in the old dormitories that were not set up to house a couple of science classes, let alone the entire department.
